North-South Railway
Completed after three decades, the North-South Railway promises to accelerate development in central Brazil
Bento Lima, the former director of Valec, is currently working on a project that has the North-South Railway as its key, which is a new private railroad in Maranhão, leading to the TUP Alcântara (MA), a port with a deep draft (25 meters) capable of receiving the largest ships in the world and which is scheduled to be operational at the beginning of the next decade.
According to calculations by the company GPM – Grão-Pará Maranhão, which has teamed up with Deutsche Bahn, the German state-owned railroad company, and the Brazilian company Sysfer Consultoria E Sistemas, the use of these large ships could lead to a reduction of US$ 15 per ton in the logistics of transporting grain from the Midwest of Brazil to Asia. For the goods to reach the TUP, according to Bento, the North-South highway will be essential.
